Polyp – What is it?

In simple words, a polyp is a small, unusual growth or lump that can develop inside the body. You can think of it like a small bump or extra piece of flesh, similar to a pimple or skin tag. In simple words, a polyp is a small, unusual growth or lump that can develop inside the body. You can think of it like a small bump or extra piece of flesh, similar to a pimple or skin tag. Polyps are usually soft and can vary in shape and size. Some look like tiny dots, while others can be as big as a grape.

Polyps can grow in different parts of the body, but they are most commonly found in the following places:

  • Colon (Large Intestine): This is the most common location.

  • Nose: Often due to swelling from allergies or infections.

  • Uterus: In women.

  • Stomach

  • Bladder

Most polyps are harmless (non-cancerous), but some types can turn into cancer over time. That’s why it is important to detect and treat them early.

  • English: Polyp

  • Arabic: Saleelah (سَلِيلَة)

Many polyps do not cause any clear symptoms, especially when they are small. People often don’t even know they have a polyp until a test is done for another reason. However, when symptoms do appear, they depend on the type and location of the polyp. Common symptoms include:

Colon Polyps:

  • Blood in stool

  • Abdominal pain or discomfort

  • Change in bowel habits (like ongoing constipation or diarrhea)

  • Tiredness or weakness due to blood loss

Nasal Polyps:

  • Blocked nose

  • Runny nose

  • Reduced sense of smell

  • Feeling of pressure on the face

Uterine Polyps:

  • Heavy periods

  • Bleeding between periods

  • Bleeding after menopause

Stomach Polyps:

  • Stomach pain

  • Nausea or vomiting

  • Anemia (in rare cases)

Bladder Polyps:

  • Blood in urine

  • Frequent urination

  • Pain during urination

If you experience any of these symptoms, it is important to see a doctor.

The exact cause of polyps is often unknown, but some factors can increase the risk:

Polyp Detail

  • Age: More common in older people.

  • Family History: If someone in your family had polyps or colon cancer.

  • Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD): Like ulcerative colitis or Crohn's disease.

  • Obesity

  • Smoking

  • Diet: Low fiber and high fat diet.

  • Genetic Disorders: Such as Familial Adenomatous Polyposis (FAP), which greatly increases the risk.

Nasal polyps often result from allergies, asthma, or repeated infections. Uterine polyps may be linked to hormonal changes.

Treatment depends on the type, size, and location of the polyp. In most cases, polyps need to be removed, especially if there's a risk of cancer. Common treatment methods include:

  • Polypectomy: The most common method for removing colon polyps using a special tool during a colonoscopy. It is usually safe and not painful.

  • Endoscopic Mucosal Resection (EMR): Used for large or flat polyps. A fluid is injected under the polyp to lift and remove it more easily.

  • Surgery: Required if the polyp is very large or cancerous. The affected part is removed surgically.

  • Nasal Polyps Treatment: Small polyps can be treated with steroid sprays or drops. Large ones may need surgery.

  • Uterine Polyps Treatment: Removed using hysteroscopy (a small camera inserted into the uterus).

After treatment, regular checkups and screening may be recommended by doctors to monitor for new polyps.

Although you can't always prevent polyps, certain steps can lower the risk:

  • Healthy Diet: Eat more fruits, vegetables, and fiber-rich foods. Avoid high-fat foods.

  • Regular Exercise: Stay physically active.

  • Maintain Healthy Weight: Keep your weight in a healthy range.

  • Quit Smoking: If you smoke, try to stop.

  • Regular Screenings: Especially if you're older or have a family history of polyps or cancer, get screened as advised by your doctor.

  • Control Allergies: If you have nasal polyps, manage your allergies properly.

In Unani medicine, polyps are believed to be caused by an imbalance or excess of body fluids. Treatment aims to balance these fluids and stop the growth. Common remedies include:

  • Munakka (Raisins): Used for cleansing and reducing swelling.

  • Ginger: Helps with digestion and reduces inflammation.

  • Honey: Has antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties.

  • Herbal decoctions and pastes: Help detox the body and improve health.

Treatment varies based on the patient’s body type and location of the polyp. Always consult a qualified Unani practitioner.

Prophetic medicine focuses on natural remedies and teachings from the life of the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH). Although polyps are not directly mentioned, these items are recommended for general health and healing:

  • Honey: Mentioned in Hadith as a healing remedy. Useful for various illnesses.

  • Black Seed (Kalonji): The Prophet (PBUH) said it cures all diseases except death.

  • Olive Oil: Has many health benefits.

  • Balanced Diet: The Prophet (PBUH) encouraged eating simple and healthy foods.

Though there is no specific prophetic cure for polyps, using these remedies can improve overall health and strengthen the immune system. Always consult a medical expert for treatment.

The Holy Quran mentions that it contains healing for believers:

"And We send down from the Qur'an that which is a healing and a mercy to those who believe..."

There is no specific verse for polyp treatment, but reciting the Quran can bring peace and strength, which positively affects physical health. Reading Quran, making dua (supplication), and trusting in Allah can help in dealing with illness.

Important: For medical treatment, always consult qualified health professionals.
